I should have taken a screen cap before I deleted the post, but I didn’t. Today was a long day of working on the Disco, which included some confusion about this little chap I found hanging out in my headliner.

Kinja'd!!!

Sure looks like a ground to me! It is hanging off the wireless receiver for the key fob, so it not being terminated might explain the woeful fob range, frequently measured in inches, not feet, I’ve had since I bought the car.

Tentatively , I used a jumper wire to connect it to ground.

Range was not improved. If anything it might be a bit worse?

Odd.

Ok so I checked the wiring diagram, which insisted that my receiver only has two wires attached to it, not two plus this thing.

Kinja'd!!!

Huh.

So I made the same mistake I always do and asked the Facebook Land Rover group.

Quickly I received an authoritative response that OF COURSE IT IS A GROUND CONNECT IT DUH!

Only... I did some more science and attached a long wire to this ring terminal on one end and left the other floating...

And my wireless range was about doubled.

Ok... so NOT A GROUND DUH!

Pretty sure this is Land Rover’s half-assed attempt at an external antenna?

I’m going with it.

There is something about Land Rover owners. Some years ago, I was considering buying a Disco, but the steering had a lot of play in it. I naively asked on a forum (not Facebook) how difficult/expensive it was to replace the steering rack.

The only responses I got was along the lines of “Land Rovers don’t have steering racks”. No useful answers to my question.

I mean....you shouldn’t have second guessed yourself. It’s clearly an antenna. I’ve learned with all things Land Rover, to trust my instincts and general car knowledge and not the “forum experts”. Most of them will tell you that my LR4 doesn’t have an oil drain plug

The Volvo facebook group was convinced I couldn’t take my water pump off because I forgot a bolt (which I was sure I took off). Turns out it was actually a big ‘ol blob of sealant that kept it from sliding right off the water pipe.

I was right, but at what cost?

Exocet group has been great. That's the exception to the rule.

It likely attaches to something to use that part as an antenna.

It’s a testament to Redblock Jesus that this car always ran nice & cool despite having a water pump that looked like ass .
